Navigating the Media Funding Labyrinth

When it comes to accessing funding for your company and publications, knowing where to start or which programs to apply to can be daunting. With both federal and provincial government agencies now providing grants to support Canadian publishers, Magazines Canada has organized a special webinar session featuring speakers from the Department of Canadian Heritage and Ontario Creates, who will explain the various programs and resources they have available. You’ll hear how other publishers navigated the processes and we’ll answer your questions about how to access and qualify for them as well as what it takes to be successful in your application. Speakers Todd Latham Moderator – President @Actual Media Todd is a Canadian media entrepreneur, business advisor and industry communicator with 30+ years experience in the business of water, environment and infrastructure. He is President of Actual Media Inc. a full-service publishing, events and creative agency that produces ReNew Canada, EnvironmentJournal.ca and Water Canada publications. Todd is also the co-chair of Magazines Canada B2B Advisory Committee, an active cleantech investor and a proud IAE alumnus of 2041- an international organization committed to the preservation of the Antarctic continent. Matt Hilliard-Forde Panelist – Program Consultant @Ontario Creates Matt Hilliard-Forde is a Program Consultant at Ontario Creates, where he administers the agency’s support for Ontario’s magazine sector, primarily through the Magazine Fund and Interactive Digital Media Fund. Josée Shank Panelist – Head, Program Administration@Canada Periodical Fund – Department of Canadian Heritage In early 2020 Josée joined the Canada Periodical Team as Head – Program Administration. In the last two years, she supervised the delivery of the Business Innovation and Collective Initiatives and managed and delivered the Special Measures for Journalism Fund to help organizations that were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Steven Burns Panelist – Canada Periodical Fund – Department of Canadian Heritage Steven Burns joined the Public Service in 2008 with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency where he worked for the Litigation Task Force as well as in the Office of Biohazard Containment and Safety where he worked in Research and Program Delivery.   In 2013 Steven moved to the Public Health Agency of Canada where he worked with the Centre for Biosecurity where he worked in Research, Data Management and Program Delivery. Steven is currently a Program Officer with the Canada Periodical Fund.  In his spare time he is either training for, running or recovering from marathons, Spartan races and triathlons. Karine Morin Panelist – Manager, Aid to Publishers @Canada Periodical Fund – Department of Canadian Heritage Karine became manager of the Aid to Publishers component in January 2018 and started working on the modernization of the Canada Periodical Fund, which was implemented for the 2021-2022 funding cycle. Over the last two funding cycles, she also oversaw the delivery of the top-up funding to the eligible Aid to Publishers recipients to help periodicals and publishing firms that were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
