Magazines Canada member Saltscapes magazine has joined with Metro Guide Publishing, part of the Advocate Group of Companies. The merger, announced on September 27, sees two of Atlantic Canada’s largest magazine publishing and content companies come together to create one diversified media, information and events company.
Saltscapes magazine was established in 1999 by Jim and Linda Gourlay. The magazine currently reaches more than 530,000 readers per issue in print and online, and the Saltscapes brand has grown to include special issue publications, online newsletters and the Saltscapes East Coast Expo events.
In a joint press release announcing the merger, the Gourlays said, “Saltscapes continues to be a journey of passion. We are a multi-platform, multi-award-winning brand that continues to delight and engage high demographic consumers all across the region and beyond. Today we are strengthened. […] Our core values have remained the same for 19 years—excellent quality standards in publishing and events, a passionate, fiercely proud team and traditional values of strong business integrity exceeding consumer and client expectations at every turn. That won’t change.”
Metro Guide Publishing (MGP) is a content company based in Atlantic Canada that publishes more than 13 magazines, including Halifax Magazine and Magazines Canada member East Coast Living, reaching seven market sectors and serving more than three million readers. MGP is part of the Advocate Group of Companies, a print communications company that publishes newspapers, magazines and websites, as well as operating design and photography studios, commercial printers, outdoor media, signage and distribution services.
From Sean Murray, CEO of MGP and Advocate: “Jim and Linda Gourlay have set themselves apart as national industry leaders and innovators. We are thrilled that they are joining the Advocate Family. Our collective focus will be on how to leverage our full portfolio of products, services, events and publications to capture, honour and promote our east coast community, culture and economy.”
As noted in the press release, the Saltscapes team will join MGP without any anticipated job reductions, and the newly merged teams will focus on sharing combined strengths with an eye to growth.
