A note from our Board Chair:
Dear Magazines Canada members,
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am pleased to share the draft Magazines Canada Strategic Plan, 2018–2023.
This five-year Strategic Plan will span Magazines Canada’s 50th anniversary, and continue the association’s tradition of advocating for and serving the Canadian magazine industry that goes back 100 years, to the original founding of the Canadian Business Press in 1920.
The magazine world has changed considerably during the decades these organizations have existed, but the need for a united voice advocating for magazines remains constant. With your support, Magazines Canada has built a “big tent” for the nation’s magazine media: from small independent literary and cultural magazines, to professional and B2B journals, to consumer titles that are some of our country’s most trusted brands for news, views and entertainment—in print and across all social and digital platforms.
With major change in play in government policy and in the consumption habits of consumers, as well as in our industry itself, this is the time for new ideas and new direction. We need our association to do what it was formed to do: reflect and represent the industry it serves, especially as that industry evolves and changes over time.
I think you will find this draft Strategic Plan strikes the right balance of maintaining core services for our members (such as great professional development tools and events), while opening our association to new directions too (such as our plan to welcome digital-only magazines into our midst).
Work on this plan started over a year ago, and has been a major focus of the Board, various committees and task groups, and Magazines Canada staff for the past number of months. We now would like to invite you—our key stakeholders and partners—to provide comment as we finalize our strategy and prepare for new challenges in 2018.
We want to hear from you: this final step in our process is the best way to help shape your association for the next five years, and the Board will review all feedback received before finalizing the plan in 2018. Thanks in advance for your support of our industry group and for taking an active role in what we do next.
