Government of Canada extends support for Special Measures for Journalism (SMJ)

Oct 15, 2025

On Tuesday the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages, announced a $12-million investment to extend the Canada Periodical Fund’s Special Measures for Journalism component for this fiscal year (2025–26). This is tremendous good news for the many magazine publishers that found SMJ to be an incredible support and stabilizing force in an unstable time. Magazines Canada has been advocating hard for this outcome with our partners in the Canadian Magazine Coalition—the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association, Magazines BC, and L’Association Québécoise des Éditeurs de Magazines—along with our esteemed federal lobbyist Nicole C. Doucet and YOU, our steadfast members who signed the letters, shared our social posts, and helped us get the message through about the importance of SMJ.

You can read more about this announcement here and the application process here. Deadline to apply this year is November 17, 2025. But before you get to work on those applications, please don’t forget to take a moment to celebrate the good news!
