Federal Government Announces More Support for Canadian Magazines

May 8, 2020

Dear Magazines Canada members,

Today, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Hon. Steven Guilbeault, announced more details regarding the new COVID-19 Emergency Support Fund for Cultural, Heritage and Sport Organizations.

For magazines that receive Aid to Publishers support from the Canada Periodical Fund, this support will take the form of a 25% top-up to the amount you will receive for your 2020 ATP contribution, coming in the next few weeks. You will need to fill out an attestation before the additional payment can be processed. The CPF program will send the attestation to all eligible magazines next week.

For Canada Council-supported magazines, the Council is receiving $55 million to administer to its supported organizations. This should include magazines that receive support from the Canada Council. We will confirm this 100% for you.

For magazines that do not receive Canada Periodical Fund Aid to Publishers support or Canada Council support at this time, Canadian Heritage is putting the final touches on a program for these magazines. More details will be forthcoming in the next few weeks. We will push to learn more about this. Details are vague at the moment, but it is great to see they have included these magazines.

The backgrounder published today alongside the news release is here. We’ll have more details to share at our weekly Member Town Hall on Thursday, May 14, at 2 PM EST. Please join us!
