Announcing the 2020 Magazines Canada National Paid Internship Program

New Opportunity Supports Paid Interns for Members

Magazines Canada is pleased to announce the launch of the 2020 National Paid Internship Program, which offers participating publishers funding to reimburse 50% of the salary and payroll benefit expenses for a full-time internship position of up to six months.

In these challenging times, the National Paid Internship Program has a direct, bottom-line impact by creating and supporting paid work opportunities in Canada’s magazine media sector. Interns can also work remotely, so that publishers can hire up-and-coming talent now.

Made possible with support from the Government of Canada via the Department of Canadian Heritage’s Canada Periodical Fund, Collective Initiatives component, the 2020 National Paid Internship Program helps Magazines Canada members across the country connect with new, skilled talent, and provides emerging creators with the paid work experience, job training, mentorship and networking opportunities they need to build careers in the magazine sector.

The 2020 program follows a successful initiative in 2019 that supported ten Canadian magazines in attracting, recruiting, hiring and training young Canadians in journalism, content creation and magazine media.

Magazines Canada members in good standing are invited to apply now for a paid intern through this program.

(Please note: Magazines that participated in the 2019 program are not eligible for the 2020 program.)

2020 Program Details

Ten subsidized paid internships are available. Each internship is defined as an up to six-month contract position (40 hours per week, or provincial equivalent full-time hours) with an end date of December 2020.

Interns can work remotely. In the application, publishers are asked to show how they will provide an intern with meaningful work, indicate who will be directly responsible as the intern’s supervisor, and outline the structure in place to provide an enriched intern experience.

There is a limit of one intern per magazine. Two small magazines (annual print circulation of up to 5,000 copies) can submit a joint application for a shared internship position, as long as each magazine has at least one paid full-time employee to supervise the intern.

To apply, please complete an application form and submit it to Magazines Canada any time during the enrollment period, beginning today, May 14, 2020 and ending when the 10 co-funded internships have been allocated.
