2020–2021 Magazines Canada Board of Directors Elected

At its annual meeting on June 30, the members of Magazines Canada elected the association Board of Directors for 2020–21. The meeting was held online. The directors are:

In her remarks to members, Jennifer Varkonyi, now in her second year as Board Chair, affirmed that Magazines Canada “continues to adapt to the changing industry it serves, [focusing] on the priority area of member engagement, including member retention, member repatriation (bringing members who have not renewed their membership back to the association), and new member recruitment.”

“Balancing the need to deliver a strong program of initiatives within a tight set of financial and human resources is the challenge for any member-driven not-for-profit organization,” observed Board Treasurer, Gilles Gagnier. “The association will work to retain existing members and recruit new members and sponsors…. Maintaining crucial operating support from the federal government and the provincial government in Ontario is also a priority.”

“On the expense side,” Gagnier continued, “in addition to ongoing prudent management of expenses, Magazines Canada has made the decision to sublet its office space in Toronto to realize additional savings…. Management’s focus remains ensuring the long-term sustainability of the association so it can continue to serve you: its members.”

Magazines Canada continues to implement a business plan for 2020–21 that reflects the association’s 2018–23 strategic plan mandate to connect, inspire and advance Canada’s magazine media. The association will continue to deliver four core services most valued by our members:

  • Government relations issues as identified and prioritized by members
  • Retail distribution service
  • High-quality responsive professional development resources and networking opportunities for the industry
  • Industry research as identified and prioritized by members

Finally, Magazines Canada will maintain and build on its commitment to serving members, every day.
