The Star Issue

Shockingly, somehow, summer is coming to an end. The sun is taking longer to get out of bed in the morning and it’s a little chilly in certain parts of Canada these days. But summer is going out with some flare this year—from the gorgeous Perseid meteor shower in mid-August (that’s what our cover image above is from!) to the amazing human stars we’ll be working with as part of our range of exciting magazine events in September. We have a lot of great stuff to get ready for in early fall, which makes the sting (and chill) of summer’s end a little easier to bear.

Starting strong on September 9 with a Digital Workshop in partnership with Toronto Word on the Street, So You Still Want to Make a Magazine? And then onward and westward September 17 and 18 with the Alberta Magazines Conference in Calgary and then our very own Magazines Canada Symposium on September 23 in Toronto and streaming, and then rolling right on into Toronto Word on the Street on September 26 and 27. At Toronto WOTS, Magazines Canada will be the presenting sponsor of Magazines Mews, as well as hosting our booth (including a few members sitting with us) AND for the first time ever, our own Chill Zone, where readers can relax with their newly purchased magazines or even pickup some free back issues. We will also be hosting the thought-provoking Human-Intelligence Panel and the in-person version of the So You Still Want to Make a Magazine workshop. And then on September 29 we’ll be rounding out the month with an important and insightful webinar on State of Audience in Media 2026: The Advantage Belongs to Publishers Who Own the Connection (registration for members | registration for non-members).

You can read much more about all of these events in the newsletter below and we really hope to see you at some of them—ALL OF THEM?? Fall is a great time to connect, so please read on about these events and so much more and see what works for you. And if all else fails, watch the skies…

Support for Special Measures for Journalism (SMJ)

The government needs to hear from SMJ recipients directly. A strong show of support from our members in our communications with the Government of Canada is critical. We need a united voice from coast to coast to coast.
