Long-form features get all the glory, but short pieces are the glue that holds magazines together. Avenue magazine Senior Editor Shelley Arnusch shares her tips and tricks for improving your short game and creating engaging, interesting and readable copy in 400 words or less.

The seminar is intended for new and seasoned magazine writers and communicators and will cover:

  • Useable tips on how to make your short copy shine (and what to avoid)
  • How to use short-form writing as building blocks for exceptional editorial packages
  • How writing short is a gateway to long for emerging writers

Shelley Arnusch is the Senior Editor at Avenue Magazine in Calgary, a position that sees her working with all sections of the magazine, including the mountain-adventure section, which she oversees. Born and raised in Alberta, she began her journalism career as the entertainment editor at Pique Newsmagazine in Whistler. Following her return to Calgary, she worked at the Calgary Herald’s Swerve Magazine. She has also written for a variety of other print publications including WestJet Magazine, USA Today, Canadian Geographic and several ski magazines, and is the author of the children’s book Too Many Teddies. Arnusch is a National Magazine Award-winner for service journalism writing and has silver awards from both AMPA and IRMA for mountain-adventure editorial packages. As you might have guessed, she’s pretty into outdoorsy stuff, but also surf tunes, cruiser-bike rides, patio cocktails and family hangouts.
