Magazines Canada Symposium

May 20, 2025

It’s the Magazines Canada Symposium, our first in-person (and hybrid) conference since pre-pandemic! A lot has changed since then, but what remains is the enormous value of magazine media people getting together, sharing great ideas, and helping each other with the challenges of our ever-evolving industry. What a great afternoon we have lined up! After an exclusive members-only lunch, we’ll dive into three fascinating panel discussions on urgent topics as chosen by members in our most recent engagement survey (details below). And then a cocktail hour to relax, connect, and discuss what we’ve heard. All in the beautiful surroundings of the Islington Golf and Country Club. All of this is included with your membership at no additional costs—tickets for staff at member publications, individual, professional development, or student/instructor members in good standing are all at no cost!

Our amazing panel lineup:
Increasing ad revenue: Let’s talk ad sales—what’s gotten harder in the past few years and how we pivot, what’s gotten easier (if anything), how different areas of the industry are working with current trends and some general best practices. And of course a Q&A. Our esteemed panel: Pam Chodda Young/Newcom Media, Nick Watson/Inuit Art Quarterly, Alexander Sallas/Literary Review of Canada; Moderator: Adam Szpakowski/Annex Business Media
Diversifying Revenue: Magazines can do a lot more than just send readers something great to look at. But with lean teams and a big landscape, how do you choose where else to focus your energy? There are as many paths as there are magazines but staffers from three outstanding publishers will discuss some ways they’ve made it work, what was tricky, and what they’d recommend. Our outstanding panel: Todd Latham/Actual Media, Matthew Blackett/Spacing, Bryan Maloney/The Walrus; Moderator: Corinne Lynds/Actual Media
Subscriber Acquisition and Retention: How’s your audience management game? The challenge of how to find new subscribers and how to keep existing ones is both evergreen and constantly evolving with new technology, new social channels, and new online competitions. Let’s talk about the data, the challenges, the wins, and vibes. Our amazing panel: Vesna Moore/Annex Business Media, Laurie Graham/Brick magazine, Lisa Whittington-Hill/This Magazine; Moderator: Tali Voron-Liederman/Ampersand Review
